How Much Left-Wing Nonsense Is Too Much?

When a show has great characters and some great writing, how much liberal idiocy are you willing to put up with? Boston Legal really seems to be posing that question better than any political point it ineptly tries to make. It has some of the most entertaining characters of any show (especially the characters played by James Spader, William Shatner, and Candice Bergen) and is extremely enjoyable at its best, but how much irritation am I willing to put up with to have that enjoyment? It's like watching a good movie but having to put up with some idiot next to you who ever once in a while accidentally elbows you in the head.

I watched their latest episode last night (it originally aired Tuesday; yay, HD-Tivo), and I knew from the promos that this one might be a deal breaker. One of the cases (there are usually multiple ones per episode which one would call subplots) dealt with a woman suing the government over her brother being killed in Iraq. It had a few things inserted very clumsily for balance: one lawyer at the firm was angry about the whole case as he was a veteran of the first Gulf War and found it insulting, the parents were against the case though never appeared in the show, and Denny Crane, the rightwing buffoon - though a sympathetic rightwing buffoon that the audience is supposed to like despite his rightwing buffoonery - says a few incoherent rightwing things as usual. It still basically accepted the Michael Moore version of things as fact and the main conclusion was that not enough bad things about the war are being presented by the media.

Yes, that was really the main conclusion.

It then had the audacity to end pretending it had a neutral discussion of the issue which just furthers either its dishonesty or ignorance.

Now let me go on a complete tangent and compare The Simpsons and South Park. I haven't watched South Park in a while - it's often too vile for me - but it takes on many hot topics and often comes to the conservative conclusion. This can be very cathartic for those used to be inundated with the liberal viewpoint with whatever were watching, but it looks clumsy when compared to The Simpsons (or at least, older Simpsons episodes) which would take on an issue and not reach any conclusion. It’s much more skillful; it involves primarily making jokes at the expense of the stereotypes of both sides and then ending ambivalent – no alienating anyone.

With drama, being neutral is much harder. While being a political moderate take the least amount of thought, presenting an issue in a show without beating your audience over the head with your own viewpoint is quite difficult as it means you have to take both sides seriously and present each side realistically. Most TV shows wisely tend to avoid politics entirely (with perhaps a little jibe in dialog here and there), but taking on issues without alienating larges groups of thinking people is entirely possible as proven by perhaps my favorite drama right now, House. It has taken on some very controversial issues that most shows would avoid entirely (i.e., abortion) while leaving the viewer free to make his or her own conclusion. In its episode from this Tuesday, there was a character who spent his life treating TB in Africa and is frustrated by how millions are dying because they can't get meds that drug companies have sitting in warehouses. He then gets TB himself, and refuses his meds to bring publicity to the issue. For most shows, the obvious way to treat this character would be saint-like, but in House he was made to look equal parts hero and buffoon (thanks, in part, to the ultimate curmudgeon, Dr. House), and the end let you make up your own mind about him.

How is a show written like that? I assume you need writers of both viewpoints and restrain from making contrived events in the episode that support one side or the other. The problem with shows like Boston Legal is they have talented liberal writers who probably assume they know conservatives well enough to write them when, in reality, they to conservatives are like those monkeys to the black obelisk in 2001: A Space Odyssey. And it's disappointing because of the talent involved, but there's a limit to how much my intelligence can be insulted and I still enjoy a show.

Just had to get that off my chest. Our next serious discussion will be why 5 is the coolest number ever.

UPDATE: I tried to see if Boston Legal has an address I could write a letter to suggesting they hire a conservative writer to explain conservative viewpoints to the other writers and that they watch House for how to handle hot button issues. Instead, I found this bboard. I wonder if they pay any attention to that.

Penn & Teller: Off the Deep End (Nov. 13, NBC): The magic duo tweak David Copperfield, and make a submarine disappear. Saturday Night Live in the '80s: Lost and Found (Nov. 13, NBC): This two-hour documentary recalls the comedy show during the Reagan and Eddie Murphy administrations. I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash (Nov. 16, CBS): Sheryl Crow, U2, the Foo Fighters and more perform songs made famous by Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming biopic I Walk the Line, of which copious clips will be shown even though Fox made the movie, and not CBS' corporate cousins at Paramount. Untitled Faith Hill Music Special: (Nov. 23, NBC): The country-pop singer sings--in Los Angeles, if that makes the program sound more enticing. Kenny Chesney: Somewhere in the Sun (Nov. 23, ABC): Sadly, this concert special will not shed light on the hat act's busted marriage to Renee Zellweger. Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005 (Nov. 29, ABC): Tom Cruise and Michael Jackson make the cut, signaling a paradigm shift wherein "fascinating" means "odd."

EVENTS: An All-Star Salute to Patti LaBelle: Live from Atlantis (Tuesday, UPN): The music legend is feted in this hourlong tribute concert broadcast direct from the famed lost continent, er, the island resort in the Bahamas. Nelly and Kelly Rowland are among the scheduled performers. 39th Annual Country Music Association Awards (Nov. 15, CBS): Brooks & Dunn host. Brad Paisley and Lee Ann Womack respectively try to make good on their field-best six nominations. The New York City crowd at Madison Square Garden braces for the red-state invasion. 3rd Annual Vibe Awards (Nov. 15, UPN): Anthony Anderson and Tracie Ellis Ross host. Mary J. Blige bags the Legend Award. The Culver City, California, crowd welcomes scheduled performers Ludacris and Ciara, among others. 33rd Annual American Music Awards (Nov. 22, ABC): The Rolling Stones, set to appear live from Salt Lake City, are host Cedric the Entertainer's special guests.

Commander in Chief (以一千六百萬收視洋洋領先) ， ABC的 Invasion (雖然收視率只有Lost的一半，卻也足夠保住時段) ， CBS的 Threshold (雖然收視率沒有同時段Jennifer Love Hewitt主演的Ghost Whisperer來得好，但應該夠強) ， Fox的 The War at Home (還好並沒有比原時段的Arrested Development表現差，令電視台很滿意) ，以及Fox'的Bones (七百五十萬收視率，與另一部醫學影集House配對甚為完美。)

放心的追


已經被續約全季的影集： UPN's Everybody Hates Chris, Fox's Prison Break, the WB's Supernatural 以及 NBC's My Name Is Earl 。證明只要戲好又有帥哥，觀眾就會看！此外CBS的How I Met Your Mother， Ghost Whisperer 以及 Criminal Minds,也都已經被續約。

舊愛表現出色

ABC 與 CBS 的老闆這ㄧ季笑不攏嘴，旗下下八部影集保持在收視率前十名，並囊括最多18至49歲年齡層。 Desperate Housewives 跟兩部CSI遙遙領先並非意外， Lost 收視率2千2百萬上週屈居第三， Grey's Anatomy則有一千八百五十萬 ，House有一千三百萬，WB的Gilmore Girl有五百九十萬，以該台標準而言為強棒，最令人訝異的是Smallville在強敵環視下仍表現優異。

老同學表現欠佳

Alias目前收視率只有差強人意的七百萬，Vaughn的離開讓許多死忠粉絲紛紛轉台， Veronica Mars雖然收視率升高到三百萬，，UPN台仍不甚滿意 ，America's Next Top Model的觀眾在Veronica Mars開始播前已經有一半轉台，實在不是好現象， 同時段對打的 One Tree Hill上禮拜手播最新ㄧ季，以四百萬收視率領先，而Fox得獎連連的優質喜劇Arrested Development，收視率怕是連小台UPN都看不下去。

我看完這部影集首播後，隔天跟同事說我在WB台看了一部好恐怖的影集，結果他笑不可抑，好似我說了個天大的笑話，其實也不能怪他，WB紅的也就只有Buffy,Charmed,Smallville....這種青春影集，現在推出這部也是帥哥領銜的靈異影集，是很難讓人當一回事，試映後各方的反應也都一樣：是不錯啦，可是放在WB就很讓人擔心.....不過WB可沒有虧待這部新影集，先是在滾石雜誌砸大錢放廣告，看過官網的人都說很吸引人注意，一看就知道花很多錢作的特效，還有人在打聽製作的公司是哪一家.....

Supernatural說穿了就是兩位兄弟的打鬼故事，哥哥Dean跟弟弟Sam從小就離奇地失去母親，親眼目睹靈異現象的哥哥Dean追隨父親到處尋找殺害母親的惡靈，弟弟Sam則遠離家園去追隨夢想，有天Dean突然造訪，表示父親出門打獵已經好幾天沒有消息，深怕凶多吉少，所以找Sam一起尋找父親下落，兩人雖空手而回，卻經由蛛絲馬跡更深入了解父親追緝惡靈的心路歷程，兩兄弟也越來越有默契，然而循規蹈矩的弟弟不願隨著莽撞又愛耍小聰明的哥哥浪跡天涯，於是Dean放下弟弟繼續找尋父親蹤跡，直到Sam回到家發現心愛女友也被惡靈離奇的殺害，他毅然帶著仇恨開始加入哥哥尋父/打鬼的行列，這一路上他們依循著父親遺留的一本筆記，去除了不少佔據地方的惡靈，父親的蹤跡卻越來越渺茫，直到一通電話接通到父親的留言信箱，兩兄弟於是又駕駛掛著堪薩斯車牌的古董車再度上路。

本影集格調輕鬆幽默，兩個賞心悅目的大男生加上驚悚的情節，
讓Supernatural在播出四集後就因為收視成績優越而被WB電視台加簽到一整季22集。

演員簡介

Jensen Ackles


1978年3月1日出生於德州的Jensen Ackles，4歲開始就當模特兒，在家鄉完成高中學業後，於1997年正式開始演戲，他在日間肥皂劇Days of Our Lives期間連續三年入圍日間艾美獎，並在1998年當選肥皂劇週刊最佳新進男演員獎。他在Dawson's Creek以及Dark Angel 的客串演出讓他甚受歡迎，隨後亦爭取演出Smallville中Clark Kent一角，雖然TPTB最後決定將男主角給Tom Welling演出，Jensen Ackles的試鏡讓他們非常印象深刻，於是安排他在第四季演出Lana的男朋友，Jensen出色的外型與演技極受粉絲愛戴，相關網站亦如雨後春筍般出現。他的電影處女作Devour由David Winkler執導，即將在近期上映。

Jared Padalecki


1982年7月19日出生於德州聖安東尼奧市的Jared從12歲就開始學表演，他最受注意的角色莫過於Gilmore Girls裡Rory的男友Dean，Jared最近也與Chad Michael Murray、Paris Hilton演出House of Wax，與Mary-Kate以及Ashley Olsen合演New York Minute以及與 Dennis Quaid 以及Giovanni Ribisi合演Flight of the Phoenix，此外 Cheaper By The Dozen導演 Shawn Levy 當年也特別指定他演出，也跟超人很有緣的Jared曾是超人電影新版的人選之一，他最近的電影作品尚有驚悚片Cry Wolf，亦因此片結識現任女友Sandra McCoy。

Mike走進家門，映入眼簾的是被Zach持槍挾持了6個小時的Susan，
三人在一陣纏鬥後，Susan受了輕傷送醫，
Mike在醫院與警方作筆錄時卻暗示Susan也要負責任，
表示無意對Zach提出告訴，Susan當然得之後當然氣不過，
Mike向她解釋部份實情，直到兩人趕去停屍間指認疑似Zach的不明少年遺體，
Mike在得知死者並非Zach時既擔憂又如釋重負的神情，
身為母親的Susan看在眼裡，Mike也終於坦承Zach是自己與舊情人Diedre的骨肉， 然而這讓一心只想與Mike共同生活的Susan非常痛苦，
她知道Mike想與Zach相認並多相處，她無論如何不會接受Zach成為她跟女兒生活的一部分， 所以她含著眼淚恭喜Mike有個兒子，忍痛割捨這段感情。

Bree用自己的方式來面對Rex的逝去，然而將她逼到極限的，
是Rex極無恥兼操縱的母親，EW的影評說得好：
那幕葬禮發威戲，將是粉絲一生中難忘的回憶。

值得一提：終於回到職場的Lynette分外美麗，Edie連參加葬禮都一副去釣男人的樣子。

六位同窗好友，二十年後因其中一人的葬禮而將六人命運緊緊相繫，負責該謀殺案的警探Marjorino (Mathew St. Patrick所飾, 「六呎風雲」)，在抽絲剝繭的過程中，發現兇手亦是這六個人之一。本劇的概念極為新穎─利用倒敘方法每一集以某一年時空為背景，每一集都讓觀眾更清楚每一位角色的成長過程，對他們長大後的命運有何許影響，最精采的是不但每一集都會有一到兩位新角色出現，故事發生地也一直更換，觀眾不但要猜測真正兇手是誰，到第二集為止，連被害者是哪一位都不知道。

1986年的夏天，六位好朋友一同自高中畢業，前景眼看一片光明，然而隨著哥兒們Craig和Will酒後駕車肇事，災禍接連而來，富家子Craig的美麗女友Sam有個重大秘密，只有大家共同的好朋友Carla知道內情，Carla暗戀著的Aaron則等不及要向一心想當明星的Jenna更進一步。

本劇安排緊接在Fox旗艦YA影集The OC後播出，為抓住年輕觀眾，選角囊括當紅的新生代俊男美女：Sean Faris ("Life as We Know It") 、Will Estes ("American Dreams")、Alexa Davalos( "The Chronicles of Riddick")、 Chyler Leigh( "The Practice")、 Dave Annable("Little Black Book")、Amanda Righetti( "North Shore")。

製作人Jon Harmon Feldman ("Tru Calling," "Dawson's Creek")表示：此劇最大的挑戰來自演技，每位演員都須從十幾歲演到三十幾歲，其中最搶戲的莫過於童星起家，曾在「律師本色」以及"The North Shore"中有搶眼演出的Chyler Leigh，從相貌平凡沒有自信的19歲女生，到精明能幹又美麗的女強人，她都詮釋得相當令人信服。本劇的另一位主角是出現在不同時期的當紅歌曲，就跟CBS的影集"Cold Case"的情形一般，光是音樂版權就花去不少經費，然而TPTB的堅持讓觀眾能夠隨著Robert Palmer的 "Addicted to Love" 以及 Cyndi Lauper的 "Time After Time" 墬入時光隧道。

話說FX從今年3月開始已經重播Nip/Tuck第一/二季兩次了.
因為播出時間超出長度的關係.我兩次都因為沒有錄到而錯過第二季finale最後5分鐘,有注意Nip/Tuck新聞的人都知道那是最關鍵的cliffhanger大轉折!為了接上第三季首播.我們還去netflix.com租了第二季第6張DVD.想說還可以順便看看幕後花絮.結果昨天DVD寄到了.一放進去無法讀取.拿出來仔細看--一道完全穿透的割痕!郵差是劇中的carver是嗎!!所以我們就很認命的接著看第三季.真是很離奇哪!

Nip/Tuck第三季首播收視告捷

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) FX jumped into the belly of the network premiere-week beast Tuesday night and emerged no worse for wear. In fact, things actually improved.
The third-season premiere of "Nip/Tuck" drew the biggest audience -- 5.3 million viewers -- for any episode of a series in FX's history. The 92-minute opener also scored largest number of adults 18-49 viewers (3.7 million) ever for a series on FX.

Not bad, considering that all the broadcast networks had original programming Tuesday (Sept. 20), and "Nip/Tuck" was facing the likes of "Law & Order: SVU" and "Rock Star: INXS" in the 10 p.m. hour. FX is available in about 20 million fewer homes than the broadcast nets.
The audience for the premiere, in which viewers learned what happened to Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) after being attacked by the mysterious Carver, beats last fall's finale (5.2 million viewers) as "Nip/Tuck's" most-watched episode. Its 3.7 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, is the best by a cable series, basic or premium, in 2005.
"Nip/Tuck" also drew more adults 18-49 than any show on ABC, UPN or The WB on Tuesday.

Tony和McGee冒著大雨在案發現場找尋狙殺Kate的蛛絲馬跡，然而最令他們百思不解的，並不只是為何狙擊手向Kate下手，而是Gibbs的親切態度：他不但心疼Tony和McGee全身溼透工作很辛苦，去買咖啡還問他們需不需要吃什麼，McGee的那句話最令人捧腹：「他還叫我Tim耶！」Tony還他一句"Probie"朝他後腦杓一拍，NCIS又回到輕鬆的格調。

Gibbs對於Kate的殉職非常自責，向Ducky坦承這雖然並非第一次失去手下，但是女部屬感觸就特別深，Ducky也同意他的說法，並答應他會找出更多證據將兇手到擒。然而最令Gibbs擔心的事情發生了：Abby的實驗室窗戶也被子彈貫穿，這表示狙擊手在向Gibbs的女部屬先下手。NCIS上級此時與軍方合作鎖定一名恐怖份子，並加以制裁，但對方始終不願與Gibbs證實該人是否為Ari，更令Gibbs驚訝的是，他的新上司是他六年前的舊愛Jen。

Kate用各種不同造型出現在各個角色的幻想中，還與他們對話，從女學生打扮到SM女王，SA可是滿足了每一位粉絲的渴望。

首先回顧一下第二季末發生的事：

Montecito被轉賣，各方都出了好價錢準備買下這炙手可熱的賭場娛樂中心，
Sam的前夫Casey(Dean Cain飾)表示他有信心買到Montecito，

Sam為了保護心愛的同事們，毅然先行辭職，離開Montecito，
Nessa得知父親與胞妹的下落，與Delinda一同前往倫敦探個究竟，
Mary與新男友準備乘著私人噴射機前往熱帶小島度假，
臨行前仍依依不捨的想找到Danny向他道別，
Danny在"You are the best thing ever happened to me"歌聲中，
也遍尋不著心愛的Mary....這時他突然接獲父親的意外消息。
隨著Montecito被新東家接手後炸掉剷平重新起建，團隊也各奔東西。

第三季第一集

全新的裝潢，全新的開始，野心勃勃的性感女老闆Monica (Lara Flynn Boyle飾) 最大的挑戰就是：距離重新開幕還有48小時，她要把以前的團隊全部找齊。首先被接觸的是Danny，他在父親身亡之後接手了家族的營建事業，決心不回Montecito工作；Mary嫁給了小開男友，過著幸福的居家生活，已經離五光十色的Montecito好遠；Mike為了賺外快，穿著鮮豔服裝當泊車小弟；Sam帶著所有顧客名單消失在賭城；Delinda在一家夜總會工作，還無法原諒父親Ed無法幫助Nessa順利回來的事。Ed自從Danny父親過世之後就沒有跟他連絡，在眾人壓力之下，Ed親自去工地請Danny回到Montecito，再由Danny出面把其他人找回來，Montecito新東家Monica終於坦白自己不願意接受Ed建議將開幕時間往後延的原因：她要證明自己不是靠先夫遺產一無事處的拜金女。當然Monica與另一位拜金女Sam第一次見面就非常投機，隨著Montecito的重新開幕，也開啟了Las Vegas另一段故事。

由科學家/小說家Kathy Reichs生平改編的Bones，被形容為「當CSI遇上X檔案」。就任Jeffersonian醫學/法律實驗室的Brennan博士，與她的團隊為最精英的骨骼科學家，他們利用3D立體繪圖來重塑被害者外觀以及面貌，並利用科學推論來模擬案發過程，Brennan博士的另一位搭檔是FBI探員Booth，他固執、黑白分明又不相信科學，兩人常意見相左卻又化學作用十足。

本劇充滿黑色幽默對白與一些性吸引力 ，試圖有別於其他科學辦案影集，也同時向X檔案致敬。TPTB表示當初他們找尋女主角人選時花了非常多功夫：既要聰明伶俐、性感迷人又幽默風趣，他們眼光獨具的找到了曾演出Boogeyman的Emily Deschanel。然而說服曾演出Buffy,Angel的David Boreanaz飾演出身陸軍狙擊手的FBI探員Booth一角，更是一番挑戰，製作人之一Hart Hanson表示：「我讓他知道他有著老一代男星特有的氣質，我知道這或許不中聽，可是現在演藝圈充滿了一堆太孩子氣的男演員，我找尋的是身經世故，性格的男人，David就有這樣的特質。」然而最受TPTB重視的還是David的幽默感，他將Booth的執著、正義以及安全感詮釋得相當完美，是這一季新影集中選角極為成功的例子。

科幻迷你影集"4400"於2004年7月11日在USA Netork首播，TPTB為Star Trek出身的Scott Peters以及Ren? Echevarria。其首播收視率創下基本有線電視自製影集歷史最高紀錄，共計5百七十萬收視戶以及七百四十萬收視人口，4400的成功不但讓USA Network簽下第二季共12集，更連帶嘉惠緊接時段播出的The Dead Zone，讓其收視率上衝以致順利加簽了第四季共22集。

USA Network─The 4400

第一季簡介

一團凌空而降的發光球體，某晚突然出現在曠野湖泊上空，瞬間併發後，徒然出現的是四千三百多名不知身置何處的人們，他們分別在不同年份日期被擄走，對逝去的時光未有任何記憶，年齡也未曾老去。隸屬美國政府Department of Homeland Security部門的National Threat Assessment Command(簡稱NTAC)新單位負責接收並集中管理這些神秘回歸客，並為方便記憶，對外媒體一律以整數通稱他們為4400。

這些晃如走出時空膠囊的4400回歸客，對他們而言時光仍然停留在被神秘力量擄走的那一天，然而他們回到原來的世界之後，發現人事已非：1946年失蹤的8歲小女孩Maia，她的父母早已逝去；1993年失蹤的少婦Lily，先生已經另有家庭，連女兒都不認得這位親生媽媽；1999年失蹤的高中生Shawn，回來後被弟弟以及同學都把他當作怪胎。然而最令他們受排擠以及側目的，是他們重返後所具有的超能力：Maia可以預見未來，Lily懷了神秘胎兒，Shawn可以癒療疾病以及吸取生命力。

NTAC的兩位頭號探員分別是犯罪調查員Tom Baldwin以及生化醫學專家Diana Skouris，他們的命運也與4400回歸客緊緊相繫：Tom的姪子Shawn是4400之一，而若不是Shawn的關係，被擄走的很可能是他深陷昏迷的兒子Kyle；Diana深為同情4400中因具超能力而紛紛被寄養家庭以及學校排擠的的8歲小女孩Maia，在經歷一連串事故後接她回到自己的家。

隨著4400完成檢疫程序回歸社會，部分回歸客紛紛因為伴隨的超能力而出事，Tom與Diana也經由處理這些案例，抽絲剝繭後發現擄走4400的並不是之前所認定的外星人，而是千百年後的未來人類。

幕後花絮

NBC在與環球併購後不久，看中旗下有線台USA Network的熱門影集"4400"，打算安排在該台無線頻道播出，然而4400由隸屬CBS的派拉蒙公司所製作，總裁Les Moonves當然不願意自己公司製作的節目放在別家頻道打對台，所以NBC改由向USA Network施壓力更換製作公司，火上加油的是"4400"的製作人並未跟演員簽嚴格契約，在全體演員要求加薪的結果下，每一集的成本增高為一百五十萬美金。儘管如此，內部人士表示情況樂觀，節目不管轉到哪家公司旗下，都會繼續製作。
